Leeds United, PSG in transfer tussle to sign Chibuike Nwaiwu

Leeds United and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly among the clubs keen on signing 22-year-old Nigerian centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu from Wolfsberger AC.

According to a report by French outlet Top Mercato, Leeds United and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Chibuike Nwaiwu. The two clubs are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back next year. So, the 22-year-old Wolfsberger AC defender has emerged as a target for them.

Apart from Leeds United and Paris Saint-Germain, five other clubs are vying for the Wolfsberger AC centre-back’s signature. Bayer Leverkusen, LOSC Lille, Marseille, RC Lens, and RC Strasbourg are also keen on signing Nwaiwu from the Austrian club, with all the Ligue 1 outfits submitting an enquiry.

Who is Chibuike Nwaiwu?

Chibuike Nwaiwu is the latest promising defender from his homeland to rise in prominence. The 22-year-old spent his formative years in Nigeria and graduated from the youth division at Borussia Digitals Sporting Academy Limited. The youngster subsequently represented two Nigerian clubs before arriving in Europe in September 2024 by joining Wolfsberger AC.

Nwaiwu has made nearly 50 appearances thus far for Wolfsberger AC while chipping in with five goals and one assist. Meanwhile, the Nigerian defender’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Leeds United and Paris Saint-Germain are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

A man in demand

Leeds United’s interest in Chibuike Nwaiwu is surprising. The Whites are prioritising offensive signings heading into the winter transfer window. However, signing a solid centre-back may also make a considerable difference to their bid to remain in the Premier League beyond the 2025/26 season.

As for PSG, Luis Enrique has a stacked central defensive unit, which has several world-class defenders. However, Marquinhos is on the wrong side of 30, and Lucas Beraldo faces an uncertain future at Parc des Princes. So, Nwaiwu is an option worth considering for PSG. However, Leeds United and PSG are not alone in the race to sign the Nigerian defender.

Bayer Leverkusen, LOSC Lille, Marseille, RC Lens, and RC Strasbourg are also keen on signing Nwaiwu from the Austrian club, with all the Ligue 1 outfits, including PSG, submitting an enquiry. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 22-year-old Wolfsberger defensive prospect.
