Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to sign Morten Hjulmand

Ruben Amorim reportedly wants Manchester United to sign 26-year-old Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP amid his links with Manchester City.

According to a report by Portuguese outlet A Bola, Morten Hjulmand is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are eager to bolster their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder in one of the next two transfer windows. So, the 26-year-old Sporting CP star has emerged as a target.

The Dane is also a target for Manchester City, with Hugo Viana keen on taking the Sporting CP captain to the Etihad after securing his services at the Portuguese club. However, Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to beat Manchester City to Hjulmand’s signature. Meanwhile, the Primeira Liga champions are eager to keep hold of the player for the rest of the season, even if a suitor triggers his release clause worth €80 million.

Morten Hjulmand and his fruitful Sporting CP career so far

Morten Hjulmand has established himself as one of the world’s best holding midfielders since joining Sporting CP from US Lecce in August 2023. The 26-year-old did not take long to establish a foothold at the Portuguese club, with Ruben Amorim bringing the best out of him. The Manchester United manager also installed him as the club captain.

The Danish international has made over 100 appearances thus far for Sporting CP while chipping in with eight goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Hjulmand’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Manchester United and Manchester City are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester United wanted to sign Morten Hjulmand in the summer transfer window, but the deal did not materialise. The continued interest is understandable, as Casemiro faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford. Additionally, Manuel Ugarte has struggled to make his mark since joining Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain last year. So, Hjulmand has emerged as a viable target.

As for Manchester City, Rodri’s long-term future is uncertain amid his links with Real Madrid. Additionally, Nico Gonzalez has not been consistent enough since joining Manchester City from FC Porto earlier this year. So, Hjulmand is an option worth considering, with Hugo Viana being the driving force behind pushing for the 26-year-old Dane’s signature.

However, Sporting CP will refuse to part ways with the Danish international and ask him to remain at the club until the end of the 2025/26 season, even if a suitor triggers his release clause of €80 million. However, with Ruben Amorim pushing to reunite with Hjulmand at Manchester United, it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils beat Manchester City to his signature.
