Liverpool may turn to 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck if they fail to sign Marc Guehi in one of the next two transfer windows.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Nico Schlotterbeck is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back next year. While Marc Guehi remains the top target for the Merseyside outfit, they have identified the 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender as an alternative to the English international.
Nico Schlotterbeck and his career so far
Nico Schlotterbeck has been one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga for nearly half a decade. The Waiblingen native spent his formative years in Germany, passing through the academies at five clubs in his homeland and graduating from the youth division at SC Freiburg.
The 25-year-old rose in prominence after establishing a foothold in the first-team squad at SC Freiburg before joining Borussia Dortmund in July 2022. Since then, Schlotterbeck has made considerable progress, establishing himself as a pivotal figure for the Bundesliga giants and becoming a household name beyond Germany.
The German international has made nearly 150 appearances thus far for Borussia Dortmund while chipping in with six goals and 16 assists. Meanwhile, Schlotterbeck’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Liverpool will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature next year.
Premier League adventure beckons?
Nico Schlotterbeck has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time. The continued interest makes sense, as the Reds are scouring the market for a centre-back after failing to sign Marc Guehi on deadline day of the summer transfer window. While the Crystal Palace captain remains a target, Liverpool may have no advantage in the race to sign him.
With the Merseyside outfit in a spot of bother over Ibrahima Konate’s long-term future due to his contract situation, they must keep their options open. Additionally, Joe Gomez may depart from Anfield amid his continued links with AC Milan. Several candidates, including Willian Pacho, have thus emerged on Liverpool’s radar as alternatives to Guehi.
However, Schlotterbeck is also a viable target for Liverpool, as he can be a long-term solution at the heart of the defence. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 25-year-old German international or if Borussia Dortmund will be receptive to an offer.
