Rodrigo Bentancur poised to sign new contract with Tottenham

Rodrigo Bentancur is reportedly closing in on signing a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur, as he is “very happy” at the North London club.

According to an update by Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge, Rodrigo Bentancur is “expected to” sign a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur. The Uruguayan international has entered the final 12 months of his contract “but is believed to be very happy” at the North London club. Thomas Frank has also been pushing to keep the former Juventus midfielder at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Rodrigo Bentancur and his career so far

Rodrigo Bentancur has been a consistent performer since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Juventus in a deal worth €19 million in January 2022. A native of Nueva Helvecia, the experienced midfielder spent his formative years in South America and graduated from the youth division at Boca Juniors.

However, the 28-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Juventus before experiencing stability during his ongoing stint with Tottenham Hotspur. Bentancur has made over 100 appearances thus far for the North London club while chipping in with nine goals and eight assists.

However, Bentancur has been facing an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after entering the final 12 months of his contract. While reports earlier this year suggested that the North London club had initiated talks over a new deal, the discussions between the two parties may have finally progressed.

What next?

Rodrigo Bentancur’s performances in the first few weeks of the 2025/26 season have impressed Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician recently “said he was ‘delighted with him’ after being asked about a potential new deal” at a press conference. So, it is hardly surprising that talks between the two parties have progressed.

Recent reports have linked the former Juventus midfielder with several European bigwigs, including Atletico Madrid. However, with Frank viewing Bentancur as a pivotal figure, talks between the two parties over a new contract have ramped up. The agreement is now close, with Bentancur “expected” to sign a deal with Tottenham soon.

The update by Michael Bridges has revealed that the 28-year-old Uruguayan international is “very happy” at the North London club. It will be interesting to see how quickly an official announcement comes from Tottenham.
