Manchester City suffer a blow in their pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes, as Newcastle United are ready to open contract renewal talks.
According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Newcastle United are all set to hold talks with Bruno Guimaraes over a new deal. The Magpies want to secure his long-term future amidst interest from rivals Manchester City, as they do not intend to lose any more of their star players.
Guimaraes has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Magpies from Olympique Lyon at the start of 2022. Not only has he established himself as one of their mainstays, but the Brazilian international is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
While the Magpies haven’t had the best of starts in the new season, the 27-year-old still remains one of their standout performers with three goal contributions. His consistent performances haven’t gone unnoticed.
City remain keen on Guimaraes’ signature
Manchester City are one of the clubs that continue to monitor the Brazilian midfielder. Pep Guardiola is believed to be a huge admirer of the former Lyon star and wants to add him to his squad. The Spanish manager feels the defensive midfielder could form a great partnership with Rodri in the centre of the park.
They were keen on his signature during the summer, but the Magpies were not interested in entertaining any approaches. They rebuffed City in the last transfer window and won’t be negotiating his departure anytime soon.
Given how things panned out with Alexander Isak, Howe doesn’t want to lose any more of his stars. As a result, the Magpies are now looking to renew his contract. While his current deal runs until 2028, they want to hand him a new deal with fresh terms. The Tyneside club are looking to reward him for his work and loyalty, and at the same time, secure his future for years to come.
O’Rourke on Guimaraes’ future
While speaking on the Inside Track podcast, O’Rourke said: “Newcastle had a lot to focus on in the summer with the Alexander Isak transfer saga, and they don’t want to lose any more of their star players.
“As I said, Guimaraes seems like he’s happy at Newcastle. We know that Newcastle are very happy with him.
“I would imagine there’ll be discussions potentially to be held over a new contract to see if they can keep him on Tyneside as well, but a lot will depend on how Newcastle are doing and performing.
“If they’re competing in the Champions League, I don’t see any reason why Guimaraes would push for a move away.”
Newcastle were completely focused on the Isak transfer saga during the summer, which certainly had an effect on their pre-season, and it has resulted in a poor start to the new campaign. With one of their most valuable assest forcing his way out, the Magpies want to ensure nothing of this sort happens in the future.
They are planning to soon sit down with the midfielder’s camp for renewal talks. Guimaraes is loving life at the Tyneside club, and they are keen on ensuring he commits his future to their cause. However, a lot will depend on how they perform going forward. Securing Champions League football could almost guarantee his continuity at the club.
