Liverpool will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old French international Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich in the winter transfer window.
According to an update by Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Dayot Upamecano is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the winter transfer window. So, the 26-year-old Bayern Munich centre-back has emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit.
The Premier League champions are ready to launch a January move for the Frenchman instead of waiting until next summer and risking more competition for his signature. Meanwhile, Upamecano is also a target for Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich will demand €35-45 million to part ways with him in the winter transfer window.
Dayot Upamecano and his time in Germany
Dayot Upamecano has been one of the Bundesliga’s best defenders for over half a decade. The 26-year-old was already a household name during his spell with RB Leipzig, compelling European bigwigs to chase him before Bayern Munich won the battle for his signature in July 2021.
The French international has made over 150 appearances thus far for Bayern Munich, chipping in with five goals and ten assists. However, Upamecano faces an uncertain future at the Allianz Arena after entering the final 12 months of his contract. The situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, with Liverpool among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the winter transfer window.
A man in demand
Liverpool’s interest in Dayot Upamecano is understandable. The Reds were keen on signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window and came close to securing Marc Guehi’s services on deadline day before Crystal Palace pulled the plug. However, while having four centre-backs would have been enough for the 2025/26 season, Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending knee injury has forced Liverpool back into the market heading into the winter transfer window.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid will pursue a Bosman move for Upamecano, with Los Blancos closely monitoring his contract situation at Bayern Munich. With David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger on the wrong side of 30, Real Madrid can do with a new centre-back next summer. However, the Merengues face losing the battle for the Frenchman’s signature, as Liverpool will chase a winter deal.
While Bayern Munich will aim to tie the 26-year-old French international to a new contract, they have slapped a price tag of €35-45 million on him if he chooses to leaves in January. It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can beat Real Madrid to his signature in the coming weeks.
