Chelsea attempted to secure a late move for 20-year-old Moroccan international Eliesse Ben Seghir before he joined Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Eliesse Ben Seghir was the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues were keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a wide attacker in the final days of the summer transfer window. So, the 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen winger was a target for the West London outfit.
The Saint-Tropez-born winger completed a late move to Bayer Leverkusen from AS Monaco. However, a late approach from Chelsea, a few hours before his departure. However, while Ben Seghir briefly considered moving to Stamford Bridge, a hijack did not materialise, and he completed his switch to the Bundesliga club.
Eliesse Ben Seghir and his career so far
Eliesse Ben Seghir has established himself as one of the brightest young attacking prospects in the world in the last few seasons. A native of Saint-Tropez, the 20-year-old spent his formative years in France, passing through the academies at SC Cogolinois and EFC Fréjus Saint-Raphael before graduating from the youth division at AS Monaco.
The Moroccan international, who also won the bronze medal with the African nation at the 2024 Paris Olympics, chipped in with 15 goals and eight assists in 85 appearances for AS Monaco. However, Ben Seghir’s spell with the Ligue 1 club has come to an end, and he has joined Bayer Leverkusen, completing the move nearly two weeks ago.
Chelsea wanted Ben Seghir
While Eliesse Ben Seghir has joined Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea attempted to secure his services a few hours before the deal materialised. The Blues have overhauled their offensive unit again this year, with half a dozen new attackers arriving at Stamford Bridge in the last few months.
However, after signing Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, the 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup winners were keen on landing another wide attacker. That player eventually turned out to be Alejandro Garnacho, with Chelsea sealing an arguably cost-effective deal for the former Manchester United winger.
Ben Seghir was also a target for Chelsea, and the West London club made a late approach, hours before he departed for Bayer Leverkusen. Eventually, the 20-year-old Moroccan international joined the Bundesliga giants, with Chelsea failing to seal a late hijack.
