Tottenham set to return with a winter move for Malick Fofana

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly aim to beat Arsenal and Liverpool to 20-year-old Lyon winger Malick Fofana in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Malick Fofana is still the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites were keen on signing a wide attacker before the summer transfer window shut down, but they failed to land the Lyon winger on deadline day. The youngster is also a target for Arsenal and Liverpool, with the Ligue 1 outfit demanding €50 million to part ways with him.

Malick Fofana and his progress in Ligue 1

Malick Fofana has made considerable progress since joining Lyon from KAA Gent in January 2024. The Aalst native spent his formative years in Belgium and graduated from the youth division at KAA Gent. However, he has risen in prominence since moving to France, establishing himself as one of the most promising young prospects in Ligue 1 in the last 18 months.

The 20-year-old has made over 50 appearances thus far for Lyon while chipping in with 16 goals and eight assists. Meanwhile, Fofana’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile Premier League clubs. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the winger transfer window.

A man in demand

The Belgian international has been on Arsenal’s radar for several months. However, the continued interest is surprising, considering the Gunners heavily reinforced their offensive unit in the summer transfer window by signing Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. Nevertheless, the youngster is a target for Arsenal, with Lyon’s asking price of €50 million making him an appealing option.

As for Liverpool, Luis Diaz departed from Anfield in the summer transfer window and joined Bayern Munich in a big-money move. So, the Reds are keen on signing a wide attacker, with Malick Fofana being an option worth considering. While the Premier League champions landed two strikers this past summer, they can do with a winger.

Meanwhile, Tottenham attempted a late move to sign Fofana on deadline day of the summer transfer window before a deal failed to materialise. The continued interest in the Lyon winger makes sense, as the Lilywhites still need a long-term replacement for Son Heung-min. Savinho was a target for Tottenham before Manchester City blocked the Brazilian’s exit. So, Fofana is a viable target.

While Tottenham will look to launch a bid to sign the Lyon winger in the coming months, the Ligue 1 outfit will demand around €50 million to part ways with the 20-year-old Belgian international in the winter transfer window. It will be interesting to see if the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League winners beat Arsenal and Liverpool to Fofana’s signature.
