Trabzonspor table bid to sign Stefan Ortega

Turkish club Trabzonspor will reportedly look to sign 32-year-old German stopper Stefan Ortega from Manchester City before the summer transfer window shuts down.

According to a report by Turkish outlet Sporx, Stefan Ortega is the subject of interest from Trabzonspor. The Claret-Blues are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the final days of the summer transfer window. So, the 32-year-old Manchester City shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Turkish Super Lig outfit.

The Black Sea Storm lost Ugurcan Cakir, as the Turkish shot-stopper has joined fellow Super Lig club Galatasaray this week. So, Ortega is a viable target, with Trabzonspor submitting a bid to land the Manchester City goalkeeper. Meanwhile, they will also have the opportunity to sign Andre Onana, with Manchester United offering the Cameroonian international to the Turkish outfit.

Stefan Ortega and life as a Manchester City backup player

Stefan Ortega has established himself as one of the most dependable backup goalkeepers in the world since joining Manchester City from Arminia Bielefeld in a Bosman move in July 2022. The 32-year-old has made over 50 appearances thus far for the Citizens while keeping 25 clean sheets and conceding 51 goals.

However, the German goalkeeper faces an uncertain future at Manchester City, even though Ederson Moraes has departed from the Etihad to join Fenerbahce. Ortega may join his former Manchester City teammate in Turkiye, with Trabzonspor keen on securing his services in the final days of the Turkish summer transfer window.

Turkish adventure beckons?

Trabzonspor’s interest in Stefan Ortega is understandable. The Claret-Blues are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the final week of the summer transfer window after losing Ugurcan Cakir, who has joined fellow Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray this week.

Several candidates have thus emerged on Trabzonspor’s radar, with Ortega also a viable target. They have already submitted a bid to sign the experienced shot-stopper, who has no future at Manchester City. With James Trafford and deadline-day arrival Gianluigi Donnarumma ahead of him in the pecking order, the player must seek a new challenge to be on Germany’s flight to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Premier League clubs like Aston Villa also chased Ortega, moving to Turkiye or Saudi Arabia may be the only solution to his search for regular game time. So, it will be interesting to see if he joins Trabzonspor after the Turkish Super Lig’s offer to sign the 32-year-old German shot-stopper.
