Manchester United fail with approach to sign Conor Gallagher

Manchester United could not convince La Liga club Atletico Madrid to part ways with 25-year-old English international Conor Gallagher late in the summer transfer window.

According to an update by the reliable Ben Jacobs, Conor Gallagher was the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils were keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the final hours of the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Atletico Madrid star emerged as a target for the struggling Premier League giants.

Manchester United submitted an enquiry to seal a late move for the Englishman. However, Atletico Madrid rejected the Premier League club’s approach, as the Colchoneros were never ready to part ways with the former Chelsea midfielder in the summer transfer window.

Conor Gallagher has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Atletico Madrid from Chelsea last summer. The 25-year-old spent his formative years in England and graduated from the youth division at Chelsea. While the player enjoyed some bright moments at the West London club, they parted ways with him due to the lure of “pure profit”.

The English international has made over 50 appearances thus far for Atletico Madrid while chipping in with four goals and six assists. Meanwhile, Gallagher’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Manchester United attempted to sign the former Chelsea midfielder in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United’s interest in Conor Gallagher made sense. The Red Devils were eager to bolster their midfield unit in the summer transfer window, as Manuel Ugarte has failed to make his mark since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Several candidates thus emerged on Manchester United’s radar, with Gallagher also being a viable target. The Premier League club looked to seal a late move for the 25-year-old Englishman by submitting an enquiry over a deal. However, Atletico Madrid rejected Manchester United’s approach.

Los Rojiblancos never wanted to part ways with Gallagher, and the former Chelsea midfielder will continue his stint in La Liga. It will be interesting to see how the English international fares in the 2025/26 season after a failed move to Manchester United.
