Aston Villa must look elsewhere to bolster the offensive unit, as PSG outcast Marco Asensio is on the verge of joining Fenerbahce in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Marco Asensio has been the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are keen on reinforcing their offensive department by signing another versatile attacker in the final hours of the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old Paris Saint-Germain outcast emerged as a target for the West Midlands outfit.
While recent reports suggested Aston Villa had ramped up the efforts to re-sign the Spaniard, he will not return to Villa Park in the final hours of the summer transfer window. Instead, Asensio has agreed to join Fenerbahce, and he has travelled to Istanbul to seal a bargain move, with his PSG frustrations finally ending.
Marco Asensio and an unfulfilling PSG move
Marco Asensio will be disappointed with how his spell with Paris Saint-Germain has panned out in the last two years. The 29-year-old completed a Bosman move to Parc des Princes in July 2023 after leaving Real Madrid as a free agent. However, the multi-time UEFA Champions League winner failed to make his mark in his first 18 months at PSG before they loaned him to Aston Villa earlier this year.
The Spanish international revived his fortunes with an excellent loan spell with Aston Villa in the second half of the 2024/25 season. Asensio chipped in with eight goals and one assist in only 1,119 minutes of game time for the Villans. However, he will not return to Villa Park, even though the Villans have been pushing hard to re-sign him in the final days of the summer transfer window.
Turkish adventure beckons for Asensio
Aston Villa’s interest in re-signing Marco Asensio made sense. The Villans have been combing the market for a versatile attacker in the final days of the summer transfer window despite signing Evann Guessand. With Unai Emery demanding more firepower in the final third, Aston Villa wanted to add another productive forward to the offensive department.
While recent reports suggested that Asensio agreed to sign a three-year contract at Aston Villa, he has picked Fenerbahce as his next destination. The Turkish giants have been working on the deal to sign the 29-year-old Spaniard throughout the summer transfer window. While talks stalled for some time, they have finally found a common ground with PSG.
Asensio has travelled to Istanbul to undergo his medical tests before completing his move to Fenerbahce. As for Aston Villa, the West Midlands outfit must look elsewhere for an offensive reinforcement in the final hours of the summer transfer window.
