Leeds United will reportedly look to sign 29-year-old German midfielder Julian Weigl from Bundesliga club Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by BILD, as relayed by Sport Witness, Julian Weigl is the subject of interest from Leeds United. The Whites are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a holding midfielder in the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach man has emerged as a target for the newly promoted Premier League club.
However, Leeds United will not be alone in the battle for Weigl’s signature, with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Shabab FC also keen on securing his services in the summer transfer window. Borussia Monchengladbach’s sporting director, Roland Virkus, recently revealed that the Bad Aibling native wants to leave the Bundesliga club in the coming days.
Julian Weigl and his recent Bundesliga adventure
Julian Weigl has been among the most dependable midfielders in the Bundesliga since joining Borussia Monchengladbach from SL Benfica in July 2023. The 29-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Borussia Dortmund before establishing a stable foothold after moving to Portugal a few years ago.
The German international midfielder has made nearly 100 appearances thus far for Borussia Monchengladbach while chipping in with three goals and six assists. However, Weigl’s long-term future at the Bundesliga club is uncertain, with Roland Virkus recently revealing that the player wants to embark on a new adventure in the summer transfer window. Leeds United may be his next destination.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Leeds United’s interest in Julian Weigl is surprising but understandable. The Whites have heavily bolstered their midfield department by signing Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff. However, the defeat to Arsenal showed that Leeds United can do with more steel in the middle of the park, with Ilia Gruev not being as solid as Daniel Farke would have liked.
Several candidates, including Josh Brownhill, have emerged on Leeds United’s radar, with Weigl also a viable target. However, the West Yorkshire outfit will face stiff competition from Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab FC for the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder’s signature.
With Weigl asking the Bundesliga club to “release him for talks” over a summer move, a move to Leeds United or Al-Shabab may be on the cards. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 29-year-old German international.
