Piero Hincapie wants Bayer Leverkusen exit amid Tottenham links

Piero Hincapie reportedly wants to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur are making a late push to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, with Fabrizio Romano revealing via X that talks are now active between the two clubs.

Spurs have already tested the waters with Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, but their initial approach was rejected. Now, with the player himself pushing for an exit, Tottenham have returned with a fresh proposal.

The latest bid is understood to be a loan with an obligation to buy worth around €60 million, a figure that matches the Ecuadorian international’s release clause. Personal terms with Hincapie are also being discussed, with confidence growing that an agreement can be struck before the window shuts.

Hincapie’s Leverkusen career

The 23-year-old has been a mainstay at Bayer Leverkusen since joining from Argentine side CA Talleres in 2021. He has made over 100 appearances and played a vital role in their historic double-winning campaign in 2023/24, when Die Werkself lifted both the Bundesliga and the German Cup.

Comfortable on the left of a back three or as a left-sided centre-back in a four, Hincapie offers Spurs the versatility and defensive solidity Thomas Frank wants to complement Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Piero Hincapie: A Player ready to move

Despite signing a contract extension until 2029 just last December, Hincapié is believed to be eager for a new challenge. Leverkusen’s squad has already been dismantled this summer, with key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah all departing. Hincapie could be the next out the door, with the Premier League his likely destination.

For Spurs, this move would represent a huge defensive coup. Injuries to James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, coupled with the departure of Son Heung-min to MLS, have shifted much of the transfer talk towards attacking reinforcements. Yet Frank and Daniel Levy are clearly determined to strengthen at the back as well.

With back-to-back wins over Burnley and Manchester City to start the season, momentum is on Spurs’ side. But everyone inside the club knows that depth will be crucial with the UEFA Champions League campaign also ahead. Adding a defender of Hincapie’s calibre would not only strengthen the XI but also provide cover for what is already looking like a very demanding season.
