Thomas Frank reportedly wants Tottenham Hotspur to hand 28-year-old Uruguayan international Rodrigo Bentancur a bumper new contract.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Rodrigo Bentancur has impressed Thomas Frank ahead of the 2025/26 season. The newly appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager now wants the North London club to tie the Uruguayan international to a bumper new contract. So, the Lilywhites will likely begin talks over a deal soon.
Rodrigo Bentancur and his career so far
Rodrigo Bentancur has made considerable progress since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Juventus in a deal worth €19 million in January 2022. A native of Nueva Helvecia, the experienced midfielder spent his formative years in South America and graduated from the youth division at Boca Juniors.
However, the 28-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Juventus before finding a stable footing during his ongoing stint with Tottenham Hotspur. Bentancur has turned out over 100 times thus far for the North London club while chipping in with nine goals and eight assists.
However, Bentancur faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after entering the final 12 months of his contract. While reports earlier this year suggested that the North London club had initiated talks over a new deal, the discussions between the two parties have not progressed. However, that may change soon.
What next?
Rodrigo Bentancur has impressed Thomas Frank during Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season campaign. The newly appointed manager has identified the former Juventus midfielder’s contract situation as urgent, and he has asked Tottenham to begin negotiations over a new deal while hoping the player commits his future to the North London club.
Recent reports have linked the former Juventus midfielder with several European bigwigs, including Atletico Madrid. However, with Frank placing his trust in Bentancur, talks between the two parties over a new contract should begin soon, with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium not on the cards.
Meanwhile, Graeme Bailey has suggested that Thomas Frank has a “midfield problem” at Tottenham, and keeping the 28-year-old Uruguayan international at the North London club beyond the summer transfer window will help the Danish tactician partly fix that. It will be interesting to see how talks between the two parties progress in the coming weeks.
