Xavi Simons agrees personal terms with Chelsea

RB Leipzig playmaker Xavi Simons is a step closer to joining Chelsea, with the two parties striking an agreement on personal terms over a move in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Xavi Simons is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on adding more quality to their offensive unit and have set their sights on the RB Leipzig playmaker. While the Dutchman has also been a target for Barcelona and Manchester United, the youngster has struck an agreement on personal terms with Chelsea.

Xavi Simons and a career-defining move

Xavi Simons has made considerable progress since joining RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain. Die Roten Bullen initially signed the former Barcelona and PSG wonderkid on loan in July 2023 before completing a permanent move earlier this year.

The Dutch playmaker has come leaps and bounds at RB Leipzig, turning out 76 times thus far for the Bundesliga outfit while chipping in with 21 goals and 23 assists. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Netherlands international has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs with his exploits for Leipzig. Chelsea, Barcelona, and Manchester United have been among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.

A man in demand

Widespread reports have suggested that Barcelona would like to re-sign the Dutchman in the summer transfer window. However, it is unclear how the RB Leipzig playmaker fits into the scheme of things at the Catalan club after Marcus Rashford arrived from Manchester United. Nevertheless, the Bundesliga club’s asking price of €80 million has made Simons unaffordable for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s interest in Xavi Simons is baffling. With Cole Palmer the first-choice option to reprise the no. 10 role, the RB Leipzig playmaker does not fit into the scheme of things unless the English international plays on the right flank. Nevertheless, Simons is a top target for Chelsea, with the youngster reportedly keen on moving to Stamford Bridge. The two parties now have an agreement on personal terms.

As for Manchester United, Simons will be an ideal fit in Ruben Amorim’s system. So, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo will likely be the first-choice options for the two spots behind the striker, the Dutchman can forge a fluid partnership with the duo due to their ability to play as a centre-forward.

However, with Chelsea and Simons striking an agreement on personal terms, Barcelona and Manchester United have fallen behind in the battle for his signature. But it is unclear if Chelsea will fork out €80 million to sign the 22-year-old Dutch playmaker from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window.
