Manchester City working on deal to sign Diogo Costa, bid readied

Manchester City will reportedly look to sign 25-year-old Portuguese international Diogo Costa from FC Porto if Ederson Moraes departs from the Etihad this summer.

According to a report by Portuguese outlet Mais Futebol, Diogo Costa is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old FC Porto shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Premier League outfit.

Manchester City and FC Porto have already been in touch, with the Premier League club making a “behind-the scenes” enquiry. In addition, they are ready to submit a bid worth €60 million to sign Porto, while the Rothrist-born goalkeeper has a release clause worth €75 million in his contract with the Primeira Liga giants.

Diogo Costa and his career so far

Diogo Costa has established himself as one of the most promising goalkeepers in the world since breaking into the first-team squad at FC Porto. The player is now a mainstay between the sticks for his club and country, and his exploits have helped him gain popularity in the market.

The 25-year-old has turned out nearly 200 times thus far for FC Porto while keeping 83 clean sheets and conceding 174 goals. Meanwhile, Costa’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Portuguese international, with Manchester City among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester City’s interest in Diogo Costa makes sense. The Citizens are scouring the market for a goalkeeper this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Ederson Moraes’s long-term future. The Brazilian international may depart from the Etihad in the summer transfer window, with Turkish Super Lig champions Galatasaray closing in on securing his services.

So, Manchester City must sign a long-term replacement who can fill Ederson’s boots at the Etihad. Costa has thus emerged as a viable target, with Manchester City submitting a “behind-the-scenes” enquiry while being ready to lodge a bid worth €60 million to secure his services.

However, the 25-year-old Portuguese international has a release clause worth €75 million in his contract with FC Porto. So, Manchester City may need to raise the bid after they submit the opening proposal to secure Costa’s services. Meanwhile, the Premier League giants also have other goalkeepers on their wishlist, including James Trafford.
