Liverpool will unlikely launch the offensive to sign 28-year-old French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Jean-Philippe Mateta is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds have been keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 28-year-old Crystal Palace centre-forward has been on the Merseyside club’s radar for a long time.
However, the Frenchman will unlikely join Liverpool in the summer transfer window, with the Premier League champions on the verge of signing his compatriot Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a big-money deal.
Jean-Philippe Mateta and his resurgence
Jean-Philippe Mateta has made considerable progress since joining Crystal Palace from FSV Mainz 05. While the 27-year-old did not hit the ground running at the South London club, he has blossomed into a prolific striker under Oliver Glasner, establishing himself as one of the most underrated strikers in the Premier League in the last 18 months.
The French striker enjoyed another productive campaign in the 2024/25 season, contributing to 21 goals in 46 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net 17 times and providing four assists. So, it is hardly surprising that Mateta has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, with Liverpool among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Liverpool’s interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta is understandable. The Reds have been scouring the market for a striker this summer after Darwin Nunez failed to make his mark in Arne Slot’s debut season as the Merseyside club’s head coach. In addition, Diogo Jota’s tragic passing has created the need for another striker.
Mateta thus emerged as a viable target for Liverpool, with recent reports suggesting the Premier League champions have established contact over a possible move. However, the 28-year-old Frenchman will not move to Anfield in the summer transfer window, as Hugo Ekitike will join Liverpool in a big-money move soon.
The Merseyside outfit struck an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt last week, and the French striker is close to sealing the summer move. So, Mateta may not secure a departure from Selhurst Park, and he will likely remain at Crystal Palace for the 2025/26 season.
