Atletico Madrid eyeing Renato Veiga swoop

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are reportedly plotting a raid on Chelsea for the services of Portuguese international Renato Veiga.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Renato Veiga could end up parting ways with Chelsea just 12 months after joining them. The Portuguese international is on Atletico Madrid’s shortlist, as they look to add more quality and depth to their backline ahead of next season.

Veiga made a name for himself at FC Basel, and on the back of his sensational rise, Chelsea secured his services last summer. The youngster had very limited minutes in the first half of the season under Enzo Maresca, and after struggling to cement his place in the team, the Blues ended up sending him out on loan to Juventus for the second half.

The 21-year-old centre-back was a consistent performer for the Serie A giants, and his work did not go unnoticed. While the young utility man is back at Stamford Bridge, he is unlikely to have a big role under the Italian manager. As a result, the Blues are ready to sanction his departure as long as a suitable offer arrives.

While Renato Veiga’s contract with the London club runs until the summer of 2031, Chelsea are willing to sanction his departure for around €30-35 million. Multiple top clubs have already enquired about his availability, but nothing concrete has happened so far.

Atletico Madrid could knock on Chelsea’s door

Atletico Madrid have emerged as a potential destination for Renato Veiga, who prefers playing as a centre-back but is capable enough to feature as a left-back as well as a defensive midfielder. The Portuguese international could certainly prove to be a valuable addition to Simeone’s squad.

The Argentine manager is keen on adding more depth and competition to his defence. The 21-year-old could be an ideal addition both for the short and the long run. While Atletico Madrid do have other options on their radar, they are closely monitoring Veiga’s situation.

Simeone only has three out-and-out central defenders in his squad heading into next season. As a result, they will certainly push for a new defender this summer, and it will be interesting to see if they do make a move for Veiga.
