Newly promoted Premier League club Burnley may look to sign 32-year-old German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from Manchester City in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by talkSPORT, Stefan Ortega is the subject of interest from Burnley. The Clarets are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding James Trafford’s long-term future. So, the 32-year-old Manchester City shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the newly promoted Premier League club.
Burnley manager Scott Parker has identified the former Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper as a potential replacement for Trafford amid the Englishman’s links with Manchester City and Newcastle United. However, the Clarets have yet to make a formal move to sign Ortega from Manchester City.
Stefan Ortega and his Manchester City stint so far
Stefan Ortega has established himself as one of the most dependable backup goalkeepers in the Premier League since joining Manchester City from Arminia Bielefeld in a Bosman move in July 2022. The 32-year-old has turned out over 50 times thus far for the Citizens while keeping 25 clean sheets and conceding 51 goals.
However, the German goalkeeper faces an uncertain future at Manchester City, even though Ederson Moraes may depart from the Etihad amid his links with Galatasaray. A move across the Premier League may be on the cards, with Burnley among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Burnley’s interest in Stefan Ortega is understandable. The Clarets are in a spot of bother over James Trafford’s long-term future, with the English goalkeeper emerging as a target for Manchester City. In addition, Trafford is a long-term target for Newcastle United, and a summer departure from Turf Moor may be on the cards.
So, Burnley must scour the market for a goalkeeper, with Ortega emerging as a viable target. While the German shot-stopper is on the wrong side of 30, he has extensive experience in the English top flight and can hit the ground running at the newly promoted Premier League club.
Burnley manager Scott Parker has identified the Manchester City goalkeeper as a potential replacement for Trafford. However, with the Lancashire outfit yet to make a formal move to sign Ortega from Manchester City, a deal has some time before it sees the light of day.
