Arne Slot’s Liverpool have dropped their interest in 23-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defensive mainstay Piero Hincapie.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are no longer looking to make a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Piero Hincapie. While the Reds remain in the market for a new centre-back, they have opted against targeting the Ecuadorian international.
Hincapie has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Bundesliga club in the summer of 2021. The 23-year-old has established himself as a key figure for Die Werkself, and he has been one of the go-to men at the back for Xabi Alonso in recent seasons.
He has featured in a total of 42 matches this season, racking up in excess of 3,500 minutes and contributing towards five goals. While the South American defender prefers playing in the heart of the defence, he can even feature on the left flank.
The Ecuadorian defender’s impressive rise and consistent performances have caught the attention of Premier League giants Liverpool. With Arne Slot aiming to strengthen his squad, the Reds are looking to make significant changes to ensure they can compete and dominate both domestically and in Europe.
Bringing in a top-quality centre-back will be one of their priorities. While they have managed to tie down Virgil van Dijk to a new deal, the Reds are still in the market for a new defender as Ibrahima Konate’s future remains up in the air.
Liverpool decided against signing Hincapie
The French centre-back is a target for Paris Saint-Germain and if he does end up leaving, they want to replace him with a high-quality defender. Initially, they were linked with Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie. However, they are no longer pursuing him.
The Reds have decided against pursuing the 23-year-old, who signed a new contract towards the end of last year. His deal runs until the summer of 2029, and while the report does not specify exact reasons, the high cost of signing him could be a key factor in their decision. The Merseyside putfit have decided to look at other targets, and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen is believed to be very high on their wishlist.
