Chelsea lining up ambitious move for Kevin De Bruyne

Chelsea are eyeing an audacious move to re-sign Kevin De Bruyne as the veteran midfielder is about to leave Manchester City in the summer.

According to Simon Phillips, Chelsea are making plans to make an audacious move to re-sign Kevin De Bruybne on a free transfer. The Belgian is about to leave Manchester City once his contract ends in the summer, as the Blues plot a return for the Belgian legend, eleven years after selling him to Wolfsburg.

Over the last decade, a huge section of the Chelsea fanbase as well as other clubs have debated whether the Blues made a tremendous mistake by letting go of Kevin De Bruyne. Signed as a promising young talent from Genk, the Stamford Bridge club rode their patience with the playmaker only to sell him off to Wolfsburg.

After some tremendous performances in Germany, his stay at Wolfsburg did not last long as Manchester City signed the Belgian paying a then club-record sum to sign him. That money now seems like a bargain given how important the Belgian has been for the club.

There’s already talk of a statue outside the Etihad, following a more than successful association spanning more than a decade. During his time, De Bruyne won the Premier League six times and the Champions League once alongside many other titles.

However, the two parties are set to end their collaboration, as De Bruyne is set to leave Manchester City once his £400,000-a-week contract ends in the summer. The Belgian was ready to take a pay cut to stay, but the club alongside Pep Guardiola decided it was best to move on.

Chelsea planning Kevin De Bruyne approach

De Bruyne does have a lot of teams interested, specifically from the MLS. However, he has seemingly kept the door to stay in the Premier League wide open. Hence, Chelsea are seemingly interested in re-signing the veteran Premier League and Champions League winner some eleven years after selling him to Wolfsburg.

While this may sound like a smart move from the Blues, the likelihood for this to materialise seems remote at this point. For starters, Chelsea did reportedly attempt a move for Virgil van Dijk before he chose to stay at Liverpool. However, in De Bruyne’s case, he will ask for significant wages, which will mean the Blues may have to break their structure, although his age will be the main factor for them to not make the move.
