Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid will prioritise the signing of Tottenham defensive mainstay Cristian Romero this summer.
Cristian Romero’s future has become an interesting talking point of late. The Argentine international has been linked with a move away from Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have emerged as one of the leading contenders for his signature.
According to AS via SportWitness, Diego Simeone is keen on reinforcing his backline this summer and he is all set to prioritise the signing of Romero. The Atletico manager is convinced that the Argentine World Cup winner could significantly bolster his defence.
Romero made a name for himself at Atalanta before making the move to Spain in the summer of 2021. While it was an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent in the following summer.
The 26-year-old hasn’t looked back since joining the North London club. He has gone from strength to strength and has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world. While he might not have won a silverware with Spurs, he has played an integral part in Argentina’s dominance at the international stage.
He has struggled with injuries this season but is slowly getting back to his best. With just two years left on his deal at Tottenham, his future has become an interesting talking point. The Argentine centre-back has been linked with a move to Spain and Atletico are the ones who are pushing hard for his signature.
Atletico to go hard for Romero
Simeone desperately wants more quality and depth at the back and considers the 26-year-old a great option to strengthen his squad. He has already held talks with Romero as they look to get over the line before the Club World Cup in the summer.
But signing him won’t be easy as Spurs do not want to part ways with one of their best players. They’ve slapped a hefty €80 million price tag on him in a bid to ward off potential suitors.
Los Rojiblancos are well aware of the fact that Tottenham are not easy to negotiate with but they are hoping to get that price tag down to €40-50 million. With the player interested in the move, Atletico could look to put some pressure on the North London club.
Romero is aware that he is a top target for Simeone. He is attracted to the project and feels it won’t be difficult for him to settle at the club as there are several Argentines in the squad. The 26-year-old has already held talks with compatriots, Julián Alvarez, Rodrigo De Paul, Nahuel Molina, Giuliano Simeone and Ángel Correa about the club. As a result, it is certainly one to keep an eye on.
