Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are interested in acquiring the services of Tottenham midfield target Johnny Cardoso.
According to a report from Fichajes, Chelsea are keen on signing Johnny Cardoso, who has been doing wonders for Real Betis. The Blues want to add more quality to their midfield, and they consider the American international an ideal fit for their system.
Cardoso came up the ranks at Internacional and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before making the move to Betis at the start of 2024. The 23-year-old has established himself as a key figure in the Spanish club in no time.
The American defensive midfielder has featured in a total of 36 matches this season, and he even has four goal contributions. His ability to win the ball, dictate play, and bring balance to the midfield hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Chelsea plot a raid on Real Betis
There are quite a few clubs that have been keeping a close eye on him and could make a move this summer. Chelsea are one of the clubs that are interested in his services. They wanted to sign him during the winter window. While things didn’t work out back then, Maresca’s team are willing to try again.
The Blues will undergo quite a few changes ahead of next season, as the Italian manager will look to bring in players who are a better fit for his system. Cardoso’s performances at Betis have convinced people at the London club that he could be a great addition to their squad.
As a result, they are willing to make a €35 million investment to acquire his services. The Blues are ready to pay €30 million up front with another €5 million as add-ons. While Betis are in no rush to cash in on him, the offer will certainly make them think hard.
Tottenham could spoil the party for Chelsea
Meanwhile, the Blues might even have to battle Tottenham Hotspur, who have been linked with the 23-year-old for a while now. The North London club secured a pre-agreement for the American international with Betis last summer as part of the cut-price deal that saw Giovani Lo Celso return to Spain.
The agreement gives them an advantage over other clubs as they can sign the Betis star for just €25 million. While it needs to be triggered within a certain period of time during the summer, they can certainly spoil the party for their rivals Chelsea.
