Chelsea are ready to rival Newcastle United in the chase for Angers goalkeeper Yahia Fofana on the recommendation of Didier Drogba.
According to Football Insider, Yahia Fofana has emerged on Chelsea’s radar ahead of the summer. The Blues are considering signing a new goalkeeper, with the Angers stopper now being seen as a viable option on the recommendation of Didier Drogba, as Newcastle United are also interested.
Chelsea have had many problems this season and one of them certainly is in the position between the sticks. Enzo Maresca has tried to find a viable solution for his No.1 choice, but both Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen have been underwhelming at different parts of the season.
There were reports that Chelsea were open to keeping Sanchez, although the overwhelming majority would agree the club might find a new No.1 in the summer. There have been a few names on their list, including Aaron Ramsdale, who was relegated from the Premier League for the third time in his career, and in this instance with Southampton.
Now, they are exploring another name, as Ligue 1 side Angers star Yahia Fofana has caught their eye. The report states that former Chelsea great Didier Drogba has strongly recommended the 24-year-old goalkeeper as an option to the Blues after being impressed with his compatriot at club and international level.
Chelsea are not alone in the race for Fofana, as Newcastle United are also interested in the Ligue 1 keeper. The two clubs have an advantage in the chase, as the 24-year-old will enter the final year of his deal at Angers in the summer, which will make him available for a reasonable price.
Chelsea to battle Newcastle United for Yahia Fofana
Fofana is already viewed as one of the top emerging goalkeepers in France, which could pave the way for a big move to the Premier League. Newcastle United have been interested in him for quite some time, with the Magpies probably looking at a quality option without having to spend too much, as Eddie Howe is keen to bring competition for Nick Pope.
Chelsea will have to convince the player of an important position in the team to have headway in the chase. Given the performances of Sanchez and Jorgensen, compared to Pope, Fofana might view the Blues as a better option for his immediate future as he looks destined to depart Angers.
