Chelsea and Liverpool keen on Frenkie De Jong

Chelsea and Liverpool are keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and believe a deal could be done for €65-70 million.

According to a report from Fichajes, Chelsea and Liverpool are both looking to add more quality to their midfield, and they are interested in signing Barcelona star Frenkie De Jong, who is back at his best under Hansi Flick. While the Dutch international is a key figure in the Spanish club, both Premier League outfits believe they could sign him for a fee of €65-€70 million.

De Jong came up the ranks at Ajax and made quite a name for himself while playing for their first team before securing a big-money move to Barcelona in the summer of 2019. The Dutch midfielder has been a key figure in their team since the start.

Over the years, he has featured in a total of 243 matches and has contributed towards 41 goals. While he prefers playing as a central midfielder, De Jong has done an equally good job in a defensive role.

The former Ajax star suffered a serious ankle injury towards the end of last season. It kept him out for the initial months of the 2024/25 season as well. Upon his arrival, he wasn’t really a regular under Flick, but the 27-year-old has worked his way back into the starting XI.

The German manager considers De Jong a key figure in his team and wants him around at all costs. While he is not one of their stars, his ability to control the tempo and create opportunities is certainly valuable.

De Jong could be heading to England

But with his contract running out in the summer of 2026, there has been a lot of talk about his future. With De Jong back at his best, Premier League clubs are back in the hunt for him. Liverpool and Chelsea are both looking for more quality in the centre of the park.

While the Reds have been looking for an out-and-out number six, they won’t mind having someone like De Jong, who can feature as a defensive midfielder as well as a number eight. Despite Ryan Gravenberch‘s sensational performances, they do need someone who can support him and at the same time provide him some competition.

Meanwhile, Chelsea already have a lot of options in the defensive midfield role, they want someone who can help them have more control over the proceedings. They seek an experienced campaigner, and De Jong certainly fits the bill.

Both English clubs are willing to offer between €65 and €70 million for the 27-year-old, and they believe Barcelona could accept an offer in that region. The Catalan giants do not have the best finances, and such a massive offer will certainly make them think. They are already working hard to renew his contract, as he is a key figure in Flick’s team. They are in talks with his agents to finalise a new deal.
