Tottenham undecided on Mathys Tel move

Tottenham are still undecided about exercising the purchase option to sign Mathys Tel permanently, with finances likely to play a big role.

According to Fabrizio Romano on Give Me Sport, Tottenham are yet to decide on signing Mathys Tel permanently. Spurs have a €60 million buy option in the loan deal for the Bayern Munich attacker, and finances could play a pivotal role in their decision-making.

Tottenham have endured an underwhelming season on all fronts barring the Europa League, with the continental competition being their only hope for success and silverware. Winning the second-tier European competition will ensure they will have Champions League football next season, which could change the dynamics of how they think ahead of the summer window.

Tottenham are in the same boat as Manchester United, with the fallen giants languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table. Champions League qualification for both teams will bring about a boost to their spending power in the summer window, as Spurs are still thinking over the possibility of signing Mathys Tel permanently.

Tottenham had been hopeful of signing the Frenchman permanently, and they do hold a reported €60 million option to keep him in North London. Tel, after much deliberation, chose to join Spurs on a loan deal in January, and he has been open to fighting hard to stay relevant there.

However, Fabrizio Romano has now insisted that Spurs are still undecided about making the deal for the attacking prospect permanent. He pointed towards finances being a possible issue if Tottenham fail to make it to next season’s Champions League.

Romano said, “Tottenham consider Mathys Tel as a player who can absolutely be part of the project in the future. Then we have to see again, also in this case, financially, how Tottenham want to advance in the summer.”

“At the moment, I can guarantee that Tottenham are fully focused on the present, because obviously the Europa League is too important for them, before deciding on the budget, on what’s going to happen next season. It’s similar to Man United. If you have the chance maybe to play Champions League football next season, everything can change. And so, financially, you can do way more things.”

Tottenham’s projected summer plans

Tottenham will want to strengthen their squad in different positions during the summer, and that may happen with or without Ange Postecoglou. In the current climate, the Australian tactician may feel the need to bring in a new midfielder, left-back and two forwards at the very least.

There are talks of a possible attacking midfield arrival and to make these signings happen, Tottenham will have to spend large sums of money. Hence, there is every possibility for the club to cull their budget if they fail to play Champions League football next season, which will severely damage their prospects of spending significantly in the market.
