Aston Villa, Chelsea vying for Mike Maignan

Aston Villa and Chelsea are interested in signing AC Milan star Mike Maignan, who could be available for a cut-price fee.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa and Chelsea are both considering making a move for Mike Maignan. The French international has not been in the best of forms, and he could end up parting ways with AC Milan this summer.

While things did not work out for Maignan at PSG, his move to LOSC Lille allowed him to make a name for himself, eventually earning a transfer to Milan in the summer of 2021. The French shot-stopper has only gone from strength to strength over the years, and he is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Mike Maignan remains a key figure for the Serie A club, but things have not been that great for him this season. His future has been up in the air following inconsistent performances. The Frenchman’s current deal runs out in the summer of 2026. While Milan have been in advanced talks to extend his stay until 2029, an agreement has yet to be finalised.

Meanwhile, his inconsistent performances have slowed down the talks, resulting in an opportunity for interested clubs. AC Milan are currently ninth on the table, and they are six points behind the team in fourth. If they miss out on Champions League football, they could be forced to sell a few of their stars. Maignan could end up being one of the first names on that list amid their links with Andre Onana.

Maignan could join Chelsea or Villa this summer

Chelsea and Aston Villa are both closely following his situation, and they could pounce on an opportunity to sign the 29-year-old. The Blues have been scouting Mike Maignan for over a year, and they have been in constant contact with his representatives.

Enzo Maresca is not happy with his current options in goal and would love an upgrade. Maignan could help Chelsea build on an impressive start under the Italian manager. Meanwhile, Aston Villa would also pounce on an opportunity to sign the Milan no. 1.

While the West Midlands outfit have not taken any concrete steps, they have been monitoring him this season, as he could be a perfect long-term replacement for Emiliano Martinez.

Maignan was valued at around €80 million last summer, but he could be available for half that price because of his contract situation and his inconsistent performances. Milan could look to cash in on him if they do not go ahead with a new deal before the end of the season.
