Liverpool and Tottenham are ready to battle Barcelona for the signature of Bayer Leverkusen’s defensive mainstay, Jonathan Tah.
According to Mundo Deportivo via SportWitness, Liverpool and Tottenham are both keen on signing Jonathan Tah this summer. With him all set to be available for free, both Premier League giants are pushing hard, but they will have to battle it out with Barcelona.
Tah has been a part of the Leverkusen first team for almost a decade now. He was exceptional in their title-winning campaign last season and has been one of their standout performers this time around as well. The 29-year-old centre-back has featured in a total of 40 matches and even has three goal contributions.
While he remains one of the first names on Xabi Alonso’s team sheet, his departure is almost certain. Tah’s contract runs out at the end of the season, and he has turned down quite a few renewal offers. He seems to have his heart set on a move to Barcelona.
Barcelona front-runners to sign Tah
The Leverkusen centre-back shares a strong bond with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, having worked with him during his time with the German national team. Flick is in favour of his arrival, and the player seems to have given his word to the Spanish giants.
But a move won’t be that straightforward, as Barcelona will have to manage their finances and make room in the centre-back position before signing the 29-year-old. While Tah is willing to wait for the Spanish club, his contract situation has resulted in interest from other clubs.
Premier League clubs to rival Barcelona
Liverpool and Tottenham are two English outfits who are interested in him and are willing to battle it out with the Catalan giants. With Virgil van Dijk’s contract running out and Ibrahima Konaté’s future uncertain, the Reds are in desperate need of defensive reinforcement. Given the kind of experience Tah has, he can certainly be of help.
While Spurs have some top-level centre-backs at their disposal, injury concerns have forced them to look for more options. They need more quality and depth, and the opportunity to sign someone of Tah’s ability for free is too good to turn down.
Both Premier League giants are willing to push hard, but they certainly have their work cut out as they need to convince him to choose them over Barcelona.
