Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid are considering making a move for Manchester City backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega.
Atletico Madrid signed Julian Alvarez from Manchester City last summer. The transfer has certainly worked out as the Argentine has been one of the most important players for the Spanish club in the ongoing campaign.
Diego Simeone’s team are once again plotting a raid on City. They are looking to strengthen the goalkeeping position, and according to a report from Fichajes, Atletico are interested in acquiring the services of Stefan Ortega.
Jan Oblak has been the Spanish club’s first-choice keeper for well over a decade, and he still has over three years left on his deal. But the 32-year-old Slovenian international has been linked with a move away from the club.
Atletico want to sign Ortega this summer
Since there is a possibility of him leaving, Simeone’s team are on the lookout for a goalkeeper who can compete for a place in the starting XI. Stefan Ortega is one of the names on their wishlist.
The German shot-stopper has been a part of the Manchester City setup since the summer of 2022. Despite being more of a backup to Ederson, he has still managed to feature in 50 matches for the Premier League giants. He has only conceded 49 goals and has kept 21 clean sheets.
Ortega has no intentions of being a backup anymore; he seeks regular minutes and could end up leaving the club in the summer. Atletico seem to be aware of the situation, and they are looking to make the most out of it.
While Ederson has been linked with a move away from the club, City are considering bringing in a new shot-stopper to replace him. Ortega’s contract runs until 2026, and he already has a renewal offer at the table, but the 32-year-old doesn’t want to continue being a backup.
He seeks a starting role at the highest level, and Atletico are ready to offer him that opportunity. His profile fits the Spanish club’s requirements, and he could be an affordable option for them. As a result, it will be interesting to see how negotiations progress in the coming weeks.
