Tottenham might consider selling key defender Cristian Romero in the summer should the Argentine oppose a new deal at the club.
According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham could consider a sale of defensive mainstay Cristian Romero in the summer should the Argentine choose to oppose a new deal. Spurs are open to cashing in on the centre-back amid Real Madrid’s interest, although their priority is still to keep him on board.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have missed a chunk of the season, which has coincided with Tottenham’s terrible run in the league. After a long absence, the duo has returned, although the Argentine’s future is still not secure at the club.
While van de Ven is not a subject that Tottenham have to worry about ahead of the summer, Romero’s situation could set the alarm bells ringing. Spurs had planned on a new contract for the defender back in December, and they are eager to keep him at the club for the long-term future.
However, the North London club are set for a finish outside of European places this season, and a player like Cristian Romero will mostly demand UEFA Champions League football. Without a place at the top-level competition, there’s a chance the Argentine could angle a move away, as he’s not clear about the idea of penning a new deal at the club.
Real Madrid are interested in Romero ahead of the summer, and Spurs are open to considering bids worth £60 million-plus for the defender should he oppose a new deal in North London. Tottenham are still prioritising a new agreement for the centre-back, although they do not want to lose value on the 26-year-old should he continue at the club without signing on fresh terms.
Are Real Madrid genuinely interested in Romero?
Real Madrid are set to prioritise signing a new defender in the summer, with a right-sided centre-back thought to be a position the club are thinking about. The likes of William Saliba remain their priority target, however, there are obvious challenges in luring the defender, as Arsenal are preparing a new deal for the Frenchman with the centre-back likely to stay put.
Hence, the idea of Cristian Romero might have crossed Real Madrid’s mind ahead of the summer, with the £60 million-plus-rated mainstay at Spurs a good enough target for the Spanish giants. Whether or not they are genuinely interested in the Argentine remains the question, as negotiating with Tottenham might be a challenge they may not want to take up in the summer window.
