Arsenal, Chelsea ahead of Liverpool in race to sign Marcus Thuram

Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly ahead of Liverpool in the race for Marcus Thuram, who has a £71 million release clause in his Inter Milan contract.

According to Football Insider, Marcus Thuram could have a big decision on his hands ahead of the summer with a host of Premier League sides interested in signing him. The French striker has a £71 million release clause that has attracted plenty of attention, with Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly ahead of Liverpool in the race.

Marcus Thuram is having an important season with Inter Milan, helping them lead the way in Serie A. He has also been important for their UEFA Champions League campaign, as the Frenchman is expected to finish the season as the Nerazzurri’s top scorer.

Having signed in the summer of 2023 on a free transfer, Inter Milan’s gamble with the Frenchman could pay off in a big way. The report states the striker has an astonishing £71 million release clause attached in his contract, although they also state, the Nerazzurri are looking to negotiate a new deal.

Given the host of top clubs interested in him, Inter Milan might see a large enough offer close to that release clause as a chance to cash in given they have some financial concerns in the background. Premier League giants like Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal sent scouts to watch Marcus Thuram recently, which suggests there is a level of interest in the £71 million-rated Frenchman.

Liverpool are one of those keen, with the club thinking along the lines of selling one of their current forwards and replacing them with a striker like Thuram. Darwin Nunez is expected to leave in the summer following a stuttering season, with Arne Slot not rating him highly. However, the idea of spending big on someone like Thuram would need the club to first sell one of Nunez or Diogo Jota, which does make the chase a bit complicated.

Arsenal, Chelsea ahead in Thuram chase

The report states Arsenal and Chelsea are ahead of Liverpool in this race for Marcus Thuram. The Gunners are expected to enter the market for a new striker in the summer, with names like Benjamin Sesko linked. However, should a proven striker like Thuram become available, they might consider moving for the £71 million-rated Frenchman.

Chelsea are also looking at a new forward, as they seek competition for Nicolas Jackson following the striker’s fitness struggles this term. Whether Thuram fits into their mould of a striker considering his age remains the question, but no doubt he will suit them stylistically. The difference between Chelsea and Arsenal compared to Liverpool in this race is that the London duo may not need to sell their forwards first.
