Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are plotting a summer raid on Bologna for their defensive mainstay Sam Beukema.
According to a report from Calciomercato, Chelsea are interested in acquiring the services of Sam Beukema, who has been doing wonders for Bologna. While there are Italian clubs who would love to have him in their squad, the financial side of things could make any deal very difficult for them. But, as far as the Blues are concerned, the finances won’t be a problem,
After making a name for himself at AZ Alkmaar, Beukema made the move to Bologna in the summer of 2023, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has only gone from strength to strength since moving to the Italian top flight.
He established himself as a key figure in the team in no time and has featured in a total of 68 matches for them. The 26-year-old even has five goal contributions to his name. The Dutch centre-back has been their go-to man at the back and has even worn the captain’s armband twice this season.
Chelsea want Beukema in their squad
While his contract at Bologna runs until the summer of 2027, he is unlikely to be around for long, as multiple top clubs are keen on his signature. Chelsea are one of the clubs that are interested in his services. Enzo Maresca has certainly done a great job in his first season in charge, but he has identified key areas that need reinforcement.
He feels the need for more quality in central defence, and Beukema is one of the names on their wishlist. They have been closely following his performances and consider him an ideal fit for their system. As a result, the Blues are considering making a move for him ahead of next season.
Italian clubs might not be able to afford him
While there is interest in his services from Italy as well, the Premier League outfits are believed to be the front-runners. Inter Milan have been linked with him, but they might not be able to meet the financial demands of Bologna.
They will only part ways with their defensive mainstay if their demands are met. Bologna do not intend to offer any discounts, which means a fellow Italian club might not be able to afford him. The economic capabilities of the English club might end up making a difference.
