Liverpool want to sign a central defender and a right back in the summer

Liverpool have identified two key areas they want to improve during the summer transfer window.

According to football insider, they want to sign a quality central defender and a right back at the end of the season.

It is no surprise that they have identified the two areas as priority options to strengthen in the summer. Club captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be free agents in the summer and Liverpool are yet to agree on a new deal with either of them.

They will need to replace the two players adequately, and therefore they will need to sign a central defender and a right-back.

Both players have been exceptional for Liverpool over the years and losing them on free transfers will be a devastating blow for the club. It will be interesting to see if they can replace the two players properly and fill the void left by them.

Van Dijk is undoubtedly the best central defender in the world and Alexander-Arnold is the best right-back in world football right now. Liverpool should ideally look to keep them at the club for as long as possible. It will be interesting to see if they try and convince the players to sign a new deal with them before the season ends.

There will be no shortage of clubs looking to sign the two players if they are available at the end of the season. Both players have proven themselves at the highest level for club and country. They have the ability to play for any club and they would improve most teams in world football.

Furthermore, the opportunity to sign players of their caliber on a free transfer will be hard to turn down for any club. It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

Liverpool will struggle to replace defensive duo

Even if Liverpool managed to bring in quality replacements for the two players, they are unlikely to find like-for-like alternatives. Van Dijk is the best defender in the world by some distance and anyone coming into replace him will be a downgrade initially. Similarly, it will be extremely difficult for Liverpool to find a right-back with Alexander-Arnold’s distribution and vision.

Both players have unique skill sets and Liverpool could struggle in their absence next season.
