Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Athletic Club star forward Nico Williams.
Nico Williams’s future could be one of the biggest talking points in next summer’s transfer window as he is expected to be on the move amidst interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe. According to a report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Arsenal and Liverpool are both keen on his signature, but they have suffered a blow as the player wants Barcelona move.
The Athletic Club graduate enjoyed an exceptional 2024/25 season, and he carried that form into Euro 2024. He was one of the standout performers for Spain, who ended up winning the continental tournament. His performances resulted in a lot of interest.
Barcelona were one of the clubs that were in talks to sign the 22-year-old last summer. They were looking to replace Raphinha with the Spanish international. While the Blaugrana remain interested in the services of the Athletic Club star, they are unlikely to let go of the Brazilian as he has been one of their best players in the ongoing campaign.
Premier League clubs to rival Barcelona
Apart from Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen on his signature. The Gunners seek more quality on the left flank, as they want to bring in someone who can share the load with Bukayo Saka and Williams can certainly help their cause. The Spaniard was a priority target for them in the winter, and they will most likely return for his signature next summer.
Meanwhile, the Reds are looking for their next star as Mohamed Salah might not be around for long. While Williams plays on the opposite flank and Liverpool already have a lot of options on the left, the Spanish international will certainly be an upgrade. More importantly, his potential is off the charts.
Both Arsenal and Liverpool have already held talks with the player’s camp, and they are being kept informed about his situation. While both Premier League clubs can certainly pay the £48 million release clause, they are not his first choice. He prefers moving to Barcelona if he does end up leaving Athletic Club.
The Catalan giants do admire him and would love to have him in their squad. But, he is not their priority target and recent reports suggest the player has started considering his options away from Spain, which could be a boost for Arsenal and Liverpool.
