Newcastle United are keen on extending Fabian Schar’s stay at the club, with the defender already into the final months of his existing agreement.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are confident of agreeing a contract extension for Fabian Schar. The key veteran has been a mainstay in the back this season as the Magpies are keen to keep him, much like they did last summer.
Fabian Schar might be well into the twilight years of his career, but he’s showing no signs of slowing down. There were rumours of an imminent exit from the club last summer. Still, upon Eddie Howe’s possible request, Newcastle United offered the key veteran a one-year extension to his contract, which he duly signed.
The Magpies are in a similar situation once again with Schar, as he has entered the final few months of his deal with the club. The report states Newcastle United are keen to offer him a similar extension to last summer and maybe more, meaning a 12-24 months contract could be put on the table.
There’s no decision from the player yet, as he may be waiting to figure out what the future holds. The 33-year-old has been a key player for Howe this season, especially considering that Newcastle United began the campaign without two central defenders, which put pressure on experienced duo Schar and Dan Burn.
Howe is keen to keep hold of their current top performers beyond next summer, including Schar. While the Magpies are confident of extending the Swiss star’s stay, it will depend on what he thinks, given the club are expected to chase a new defender, with links to Illia Zabarnyi, among others, ahead of next summer.
Newcastle United keen to keep top performers
Beyond Schar, there are a few others that Newcastle United are eager to keep hold of, as some of their top performers have attracted interest from elsewhere. One of these is Alexander Isak, with Arsenal, among other clubs, keen to sign him, although the Swede is open to signing a new deal, which might be linked to Newcastle United qualifying for the Champions League next season.
The Magpies are also eager to hold on to Bruno Guimaraes, along with the Brazilian, Isak, and probably Anthony Gordon, who are considered their most valuable asset. They might be able to keep hold of them all should they make it back into the Champions League, and on current standings, they are well on course to finish in the top four.
