Barcelona favourites to land Jonathan Tah

Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are behind Barcelona in the race to secure the services of 29-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Jonathan Tah is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on signing the Bayer Leverkusen defender. However, the Catalan giants are in the pole position to land the 29-year-old centre-back in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window.

Jonathan Tah and his career so far

Jonathan Tah has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world in the last few years. The experienced defender has been a late bloomer, having shown promise during his stint with Hamburger SV and the early days of his spell with Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Xabi Alonso has brought the best out of the 29-year-old, who has been instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen’s rise in the last 24 months. The experienced centre-back has turned out nearly 400 times thus far for the 2023/24 Bundesliga winners while chipping in with 16 goals and 13 assists.

What next?

However, Tah’s long-term future is uncertain after entering the final six months of his contract. The situation has piqued the attention of European bigwigs like Barcelona, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur. Barcelona’s interest in the German international makes sense, considering Andreas Christensen faces an uncertain future at the club. In addition, Inigo Martinez is on the wrong side of 30.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s interest in Jonathan Tah is understandable. Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi, and Trevoh Chalobah face an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, thus necessitating the addition of a new centre-back. As for Manchester United, Lisandro Martinez is a long-term absentee, while Leny Yoro might take some time before becoming the undisputed first-choice starter.

So, Tah is a solid stop-gap solution for Manchester United, considering Harry Maguire is on the wrong side of 30. Meanwhile, Tottenham can do with an experienced centre-back with a winning mentality after suffering in the absence of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven this season.

However, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur are behind Barcelona in the race to secure the services of the 29-year-old German international. Widespread reports have regularly pointed to Barcelona being in the pole position to land the Bayer Leverkusen defender. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for Tah.
