Chelsea and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 20-cap Republic of Ireland international Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Caoimhin Kelleher will likely leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window. However, the 20-cap Republic of Ireland international does not have a shortage of clubs pursuing his signature, with Chelsea and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.
Caoimhin Kelleher and his Liverpool journey
Caoimhin Kelleher has established himself as one of the best backup goalkeepers in the world since breaking into the first-team squad at Liverpool FC. The Cork native spent most of his formative years in his homeland. However, the Irishman graduated from Liverpool’s academy after joining the Merseyside club in July 2015.
The 26-year-old has been Alisson Becker’s deputy since breaking into the first-team squad but has always made his mark whenever he has received his opportunities. That has also been the case this term, with Kelleher keeping eight clean sheets while conceding only 14 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.
However, Kelleher wants to embark on a new adventure in the summer transfer window as he wants to become a first-choice goalkeeper at the club level. The 20-cap Republic of Ireland international does not have a shortage of clubs pursuing his signature, with Chelsea and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors for his signature.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Caoimhin Kelleher has been on Chelsea’s radar for a long time. However, the continued interest from the West London club is perplexing, even though Robert Sanchez has drawn the ire of fans and pundits. Enzo Maresca has several goalkeepers in his squad, and unless multiple goalkeepers leave Chelsea, they do not need another signing.
As for Newcastle United, Nick Pope is on the wrong side of 30 and approaching the final phase of his career. In addition, Martin Dubravka will likely end his long association with the Tyneside outfit this summer, while Odysseas Vlachodimos will unlikely become the first-choice goalkeeper. So, Kelleher is a viable target for Newcastle United.
The 26-year-old Irishman will likely leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window, considering Giorgi Mamardashvili will arrive at Anfield after the 2024/25 season ends. So, it will be interesting to see where the 20-cap Republic of Ireland international lands later this year amid his links with Chelsea and Newcastle United.
