Arsenal concede defeat in plans to sign a striker in winter move

Arsenal have conceded defeat in their efforts to bring a new striker in this window. They reportedly targeted at least five big names.

According to Eduardo Burges, Arsenal have reportedly given up on signing a new striker on deadline day as they reflect on the January window and the targets they tried to bring. The Gunners are expected to go big on a new centre-forward in the summer now, as Mikel Arteta is signed to use his current players.

Arsenal fans firmly believe the club is taking a significant risk by not signing a new striker, as they feel the decision could directly affect their season. Despite winning 5-1 against Manchester City on Sunday, the supporters woke up on Monday hoping to see their club sign a new centre-forward on transfer deadline day.

As things stand, the Gunners have conceded defeat in their effort to sign a new striker; as Eduardo Burges states, they tried for at least five players in the window. The journalist named Matheus Cunha, Mathys Tel, Benjamin Sesko, Ollie Watkins and Igor Jesus as the Gunners’ players attempted to sign in this window.

The Tel interest was the least as per how many credible outlets reported, although there’s no denying that Arsenal did hold talks over a potential loan move. There were links to Brazilian Igor Jesus, but nothing moved beyond initial enquiries.

There were credible links to Cunha, but that deal could have only materialised had Arsenal paid the exorbitant price Wolves demanded. The Brazilian has since committed to a new long-term agreement, consisting of a release clause active next summer, which could allow the Gunners to think about him after the season ends.

Ollie Watkins and Benjamin Sesko were key winter targets

Going by all the reporting on Arsenal in the January window, it appeared that they wanted to try Benjamin Sesko again. The Gunners did make an attempt back in the summer, but the striker wanted to stay, and despite trying again in this window, they accepted their fate on the chase as Arsenal might wait until the summer for the Slovenian.

Watkins was probably the closest Arsenal came to signing a striker after failing with a bid worth a reported £60 million. The Gunners were expected to return with an improved offer, but after selling Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr, Aston Villa would never sell their other central striker in a few days. Come the summer, there are considerable doubts about whether Mikel Arteta’s side will return for the Englishman.
