Flamengo are the front-runners to take Jorginho on a free transfer this summer, as the Brazilian side failed with a winter move.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Jorginho is set to stay at Arsenal for the remainder of the season before moving to Flamengo on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. The Brazilian side reportedly failed with an offer this month, as the Gunners are keen to keep the veteran midfielder for the remainder of his contract.
Jorginho might not be the starring regular starter under Mikel Arteta, but the manager has never made him feel unimportant. The veteran midfielder has been involved in some big games already this season, as the Arsenal boss feels the need to have him around in the side.
Arsenal have plenty of midfield options in the squad, as Thomas Partey and Declan Rice are ahead in the pecking order. Jorginho does provides a different option stylistically for Arteta to use in games. Still, he is mostly seen as a closer in most matches, and the Italian international is widely content with his playing time.
Hence, the ongoing links with a move away from the Emirates seemed odd for Arsenal fans, who would not have liked to see a quality midfielder leave in the middle of an important season. Among those keen on the veteran midfielder, Flamengo held advanced conversations to sign him.
There was a gap in their offer to that of Arsenal and Jorginho’s demands, meaning a move looked all the more unlikely in the days leading to the transfer deadline. The Italian international is thought to be happy with his current surroundings, meaning there was no rush to depart despite his lack of regular game time.
Flamengo to seal Bosman move for Jorginho
Flamengo are not deterred by the failure to sign Jorginho in January, as they are set to sign the midfielder on a Bosman deal in the summer. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the same and insisted that Arsenal did not accept their offer for the midfielder this month. He will move to the Brazilian club before the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
As things stand, Arsenal have already planned for changes to the midfield ahead of next season, as they are set to sign Martin Zubimendi in the summer. That potential arrival is the Spaniard could signal the end of at least one current midfielder, as Jorginho and Thomas Partey are coming to the end of their contract next summer.
