Bayer Leverkusen are in talks with Aston Villa to sign Emiliano Buendia this month, as Xabi Alonso is keen to add more firepower.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen are keen to add Emiliano Buendia this month with Xabi Alonso keen on the Argentine attacking midfielder. The 2023-24 Bundesliga champions are in talks with Aston Villa over a deal,
Emiliano Buendia has struggled for minutes despite being fit and ready to play under Unai Emery following some injuries in the past. The Spanish manager has not preferred to play with the Argentine, instead using him in the dying minutes of games.
Despite playing 18 times across all competitions, Buendia has started only three games, including one in the Champions League and two in their Carabao Cup campaign. The 28-year-old playmaker might feel the need to keep playing regularly, as for more reasons, this move from Norwich City back in 2021 has not worked out very well for the Argentine.
There’s some interest coming from Bayer Leverkusen, with the 2023-24 Bundesliga Champions already in talks with Aston Villa over signing Buendia. There’s no clarity on whether this will be a loan or a permanent transfer, as one might have assumed the Premier League side will sell him, given he has 18 months left on his current deal.
As per David Ornstein, Aston Villa has reached an agreement with the 28-year-old playmaker to extend his deal by a year, in which case he’s tied down until 2027, thus opening the door to leave the club on loan until the summer. Bayer Leverkusen have no agreement in place. However, it’s becoming clear that Xabi Alonso seeks to add more firepower to his attacking setup, with Beundia seen as an ideal option in this market.
Aston Villa could sanction Emiliano Buendia’s departure
With an extension almost in place, Aston Villa could sanction a departure for Buendia this month, as Emery is evidently seeking a new option for his squad. The manager probably wants another player who could have a bigger impact than the 28-year-old playmaker, with names like Alex Baena linked, although that pursuit seems more for the summer window.
They have links to Matheus Cunha, although Villa might be further down in the race compared to other suitors. Emery’s side are also interested in Semih Kilicsoy, as all these names point clearly towards a potential replacement for Buendia in the coming days, meaning any move for the 28-year-old playmaker could depend on the club’s ability to line up a new addition.
