Matheus Cunha keen on Arsenal move

Matheus Cunha reportedly prefers a switch to Arsenal over other suitors, as he could look to move before the winter window deadline.

According to Give Me Sport, Arsenal are Matheus Cunha’s preferred destination should he leave Wolves in the current window. The Brazilian attacker has a host of other suitors lining up a move following reports stating he’s not penning a new deal at Molineux, with the Gunners favoured in this scenario.

Arsenal fans are still waiting on news about the club’s pursuit of a forward this window after it became clear they need attacking reinforcements at all costs. Bukayo Saka sustained a hamstring problem, which will keep him out of action until March, while Gabriel Jesus’s season is over following an ACL rupture.

The latter’s problem has forced Arsenal to look for an immediate replacement, with names like Benjamin Sesko, Dusan Vlahovic, and Matheus Cunha all thrown into the mix. The latter is seen as a like-for-like replacement for Jesus, as the Gunners were prepared to go all out to sign him before news emerged that he was willing to sign a new deal at Wolves.

Instead Cunha has stalled on signing the new contract, and he is reportedly forcing a move away, with a host of clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle United interested alongside Arsenal. Nottingham Forest are also in the mix, with suggestions that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are prepared to make a club-record bid to sign him.

Tottenham were also interested earlier, although it might be the case that they do not have much encouragement from the player side over a move. Chelsea were keen, although it appears they are prioritising a move for Alejandro Garnacho as things stand. Newcastle United also held an interest, although, as things stand, Cunha reportedly prefers a switch to Arsenal.

Arsenal front-runners for Matheus Cunha, but will he leave?

Arsenal could be waiting on further encouragement in their pursuit of Cunha, who reportedly is valued at £60 million by Wolves. It might be a case where they might have the go-ahead from the player but feel the chances of the Midlands side agreeing to a sale are less.

Wolves, for their part, are likely to force the issue to keep hold of the £60 million-rated attacker. They are in the thick of a relegation battle, and it would not seem wise to sell their best attacker in the middle of the season. From an Arsenal perspective, any move might have to happen quickly, or else Wolves could reject any bid citing the lack of time to find a replacement in time.
