Chelsea are leading the race for the services of Sporting CP defensive sensation Ousmane Diomande amidst interest from rivals Arsenal.
Ousmane Diomande’s consistent performances for Sporting CP have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs. The Ivorian international could soon have a massive decision to make regarding his future as some of the biggest clubs in Europe gear up to make a move for him.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are considered to be the favourites to win the race for the 21-year-old centre-back. While Arsenal are also keen on his signature, the Blues are considered to be best-placed to sign him and they appear to be the most in need of a defender of his quality.
After coming up the ranks at FC Midtjylland and making a name for himself while on loan at Portuguese club Mafra, Diomande made the move to Sporting at the start of 2023 and he hasn’t looked back since.
The 6ft 3in centre-back has established himself as one of the mainstays at the Portuguese club. His strong physical presence, exceptional aerial prowess and great defensive awareness have attracted a lot of interest.
Manchester United who appointed former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim as their new manager have been linked with the 21-year-old but they haven’t made a move yet. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Arsenal have taken great interest in Diomande and they are believed to be closest to signing him.
Diomande could move to London
Both London clubs have been linked with him of late and could look to lure him to their respective clubs in the ongoing transfer window. The Ivorian defensive sensation is protected by a massive release clause worth €80 million.
While Sporting have maintained that they want to release clause to be paid in full for any mid-season departure, reports suggest they could consider parting ways with him if they receive a firm offer of between €50-€60 million.
Chelsea are in desperate need of defensive reinforcement. With Axel Disasi linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, Diomande could come in as an ideal replacement. More importantly, the 21-year-old is a perfect fit for their transfer policy which revolves around signing the best young players.
The Blues are considered to be ahead of the Gunners in the pursuit. While Mikel Arteta’s team are interested in his services, they don’t really need a replacement for Gabriel or William Saliba and Diomande won’t make the move to North London to be a backup.
