Brighton & Hove Albion keen on signing Tosin Adarabioyo

Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly keen on signing 27-year-old Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

Brighton & Hove Albion have expressed strong interest in Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo, just months after the centre-back joined the Blues on a free transfer from Fulham. The 27-year-old, a product of Manchester City’s youth academy, has made 17 appearances for Chelsea this season, including five consecutive starts in the Premier League.

Adarabioyo’s performances have steadily improved, highlighted by a brace in Chelsea’s recent FA Cup win over Morecambe. However, Brighton see an opportunity to strengthen their backline and are keen on securing Adarabioyo in a permanent deal. A transfer would also provide Chelsea with a quick profit on a player acquired for free, aligning with their financial objectives under Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

Chelsea’s Defensive Dilemma

According to The Daily Mail, Chelsea’s willingness to entertain Brighton’s approach remains uncertain. The Blues have recently recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace to address a defensive injury crisis, with Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile both sidelined. Chalobah has been assured of first-team opportunities, while 18-year-old Josh Acheampong is also being integrated into the senior squad.

Chelsea’s defensive situation is further complicated by their ongoing pursuit of Marc Guehi. Negotiations with Crystal Palace are ongoing but could be jeopardized by Palace’s reluctance to sign a replacement for Chalobah. If Guehi’s transfer falls through, Chelsea may be less inclined to part ways with Adarabioyo.

Brighton’s Motivation

Adarabioyo has embraced his new environment at Chelsea, expressing satisfaction with the competition for places and the camaraderie within the squad. “When you join a top club like Chelsea, there are top players in every position, so you have to fight every single day,” he said in a recent interview.

For Brighton, signing Adarabioyo would not only bolster their defensive depth but also add a player with significant Premier League experience. His ability to read the game and his physical presence aligns well with Brighton’s tactical approach under Fabian Hurzeler.

Should Chelsea choose to sell, the transfer could represent a smart piece of business, given Adarabioyo’s free transfer and his rising market value. Brighton, in turn, would acquire a proven Premier League defender who can immediately contribute to their ambitious plans.

The final decision will likely hinge on Chelsea’s ability to resolve their defensive injury crisis and secure alternative reinforcements. For now, Adarabioyo’s future is up for grabs as Brighton and Chelsea navigate the  January transfer market.
