Chelsea front-runners to sign Kobbie Mainoo if he leaves Manchester United

Chelsea could emerge as front runners to sign Manchester United prodigy Kobie Mainoo if he ever leaves the club for a new challenge.

According to Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, Chelsea could position themselves as front runners for Kobie mainoo should he leave Manchester United. The Blues could view the Red Devils star as a great addition to their project, although this will not be in the interest of those in charge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are in a period of transition and is eager to build a solid enough project under new manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese have endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, but some results in recent times, such as the ones away from Manchester City and Liverpool, have shown signs of promise.

There are plenty of changes in personnel expected in the next few windows as the club is ready to place their trust in Amorim to build the right squad. One key element of this exercise is to create a competitive team around certain players, and Manchester United prodigy Kobie Mainoo is part of that group.

Manchester United had planned contract extensions for Mainoo as well as Amad Diallo for some time, and it appears they are progressing in their quest. The two players, alongside a few others like Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Rasmus Hojlund, are the future of the club and are considered untouchable by the club at the current moment.

As for Mainoo, Manchester United are closing in on a contract extension with him, as he will be the centre of the project under Amorim. He has already shown enough quality since breaking out under Erik ten Hag and has continued being a key player under Amorim.

Chelsea keen on Kobie Mainoo

In what may come as a surprising news for the Manchester United fanbase, the Daily Mail’s Chris Wheeler insists that Chelsea are frontrunners for Mainoo should he decide to leave the Red Devils. The chances of that happening are remote, given the 19-year-old still has a contract until 2017 with the addition of an extra year.

Manchester United are unlikely even to entertain any offers coming for Mainoo, let alone from Chelsea. The Blues have embarked on an exciting squad-building project, which has made them one of the youngest teams in the division. However, targeting Mainoo as a potential addition will not bring any success, as the Red Devils are likely to ignore any overtures from the London giants.
