Tottenham contemplate reviving Ko Itakura interest

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on reviving their interest in 27-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach Ko Itakura.

Ko Itakura has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past as well, and a report from Give Me Sport has claimed that manager Ange Postecoglou is contemplating whether to reignite the club’s interest in the Borussia Monchengladbach defender. He has been likened to the Tottenham icon Jan Vertonghen.

Tottenham have looked quite vulnerable defensively, and they need to tighten up at the back. The 27-year-old Japanese defender could prove to be a useful acquisition. The Gladbach centre-back is unlikely to be an expensive addition, and he could help Tottenham improve for a reasonable outlay.

The opportunity to move to the Premier League will be quite exciting for the player as well. It remains to be seen on the situation develops. English bigwigs reportedly put out feelers to sign the Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back from the Bundesliga earlier this year.

The defender is at the peak of his powers, and he will look to hit the ground running in the Premier League if the move goes through. The 27-year-old has the physicality and technical attributes to thrive in the Premier League. He could be the ideal backup option to players like Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham currently have three recognised central defenders at the club, and Radu Dragusin is the only one who is fit right now. Spurs need defensive reinforcements in January and signing the Bundesliga player would be a wise decision.

Tottenham need January additions

Tottenham have endured a mediocre first half of the 2024/25 season, and they will be desperate to bounce back during the second half of the campaign. They need to secure European qualification for next season if they want to hold on to their best players, and signing the right players in January will help them bounce back.

A quality central defender should be their top priority heading into the January transfer window. It will be interesting to see if they can negotiate a deal with the German club for the Japanese international. Convincing the player to join the club should not be difficult for them, and he will look to test himself at a higher level. A move to Spurs will be quite attractive for him.
