Manchester City refute Paul Pogba links

Manchester City have reportedly play down links suggesting they are interested in former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Premier League champions Manchester City have dismissed speculation linking them with a move for Paul Pogba as the French midfielder seeks to relaunch his career.

Reports had suggested that Pep Guardiola’s side was considering Pogba as a potential solution to their injury woes, but Mirror Football has confirmed that no such interest exists. Pogba, currently a free agent, is eligible to return to football in March 2024 after his doping ban was reduced upon appeal.

The 31-year-old, who recently had his contract with Juventus terminated, has been the subject of transfer rumours, including alleged interest from Manchester City. However, sources close to the club have clarified that Pogba is not on their radar.

While City may not be pursuing Pogba, the player himself reportedly harbours doubts about a return to the Premier League. His mixed experiences during two spells at Manchester United, combined with personal preferences for leagues such as La Liga, Serie A, or the Bundesliga, make a move back to England unlikely.

Pogba, who made 233 appearances and scored 39 goals for Manchester United, has hinted at his future plans through cryptic social media posts. His most recent Instagram update — a timer emoji alongside a zipped-mouth and winking face — has fueled speculation about his next destination.

Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has even suggested that Pogba could train with his former club to regain fitness, though no official offer has been made. Amid the rumours, Pep Guardiola has reiterated his focus on getting his injured players back rather than looking for new signings in January.

City’s manager also expressed his discontent with the rising costs of the transfer market, implying that the club is unlikely to pursue expensive reinforcements during the winter window. Guardiola’s comments underline the club’s strategy of relying on its existing squad rather than exploring high-profile transfers like Pogba.

While the idea of Pogba donning the sky-blue shirt of Manchester City is intriguing, it appears to be a non-starter. Pogba’s reluctance to return to Manchester, combined with City’s focus on internal solutions, makes a reunion with the Premier League highly unlikely.

Instead, a move to Spain or a return to Serie A seems more aligned with Pogba’s preferences and career aspirations. At this stage of his career, the Frenchman would benefit most from an environment where he can regain confidence and fitness while contributing meaningfully to his new team.
