Aston Villa could be closing in on Romano Schmid ahead of January, as Werder Bremen might sell him for a decent offer.
According to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s search for a new attacking midfielder could see them focus on the potential arrival of Romano Schmid. The Werder Bremen star is someone that Unai Emery likes for his current squad, and the club are set to explore an opportunity to bring the 24-year-old utility man in January.
Unai Emery’s side continued to show inconsistencies following a good start to their new season on all fronts. Aston Villa are currently vying for a top-four place in the Prmeier League, and should their dwindling form continue, that target could become extremely difficult in the long run.
The same goes for their Champions League form. While their European displays have been good, Emery would still want consistent performances to cement a top-eight place. As the January window approaches, the Villa boss would want to make particular additions to the team, as he is currently looking for a new attacking midfielder.
There are links to Oihan Sancet and some other names mentioned in reports. The idea here is to bring a player he has been missing, Emi Buendia, and use the January window to add that key cog in his side.
Villa have predominantly used Morgan Rogers in that hybrid role behind the striker, and that may not be enough going forward. Werder Bremen’s 24-year-old star Romano Schmid has been linked lately, as Villa are now reportedly closing in on the Austrian ahead of January.
Will Aston Villa sign Romano Schmid?
The report mentions some doubts about a January move, but Villa could convince the player to do so in the winter market, although they face competition from Fulham for Schmid. Werder Bremen are not entirely clear on their intention to sell either, although the lure of joining a top Premier League club would prove extremely difficult for the 24-year-old to turn down in the winter market.
Bremen have not named a price yet, although the report states Schmid will not cost too much in the winter window. Hence, Aston Villa might sense an opportunity to bring a player they need in their squad, as Schmid might be the subject of an approach in the coming period from the Birmingham-based club.
