Barcelona will only launch the offensive to sign Nico Williams in the 2025 summer transfer window if the 22-year-old winger expresses his readiness to join them.
According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, Nico Williams remains the subject of interest from Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants do not want to repeat their mistakes from this past summer. So, they have defined their conditions to pursue the 22-year-old winger and will only launch the offensive to land him if he expresses his readiness to leave Athletic Club and join them.
The rise and rise of Nico Williams
Nico Williams has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the world in the last few years. The Spaniard rose in prominence before the 2022 FIFA World Cup and enjoyed his breakthrough at Athletic Club in the 2022/23 season. Since then, he has gone from strength to strength in his outings with his club and country.
The 22-year-old was top-class in the 2023/24 campaign before playing his part in Spain’s triumphant campaign at UEFA Euro 2024. Williams has not been at his best thus far this term, chipping in with only two goals and three assists in 16 appearances in all competitions.
However, the Spanish winger’s stock in the market remains high, with several high-profile outfits setting their sights on him. Many European bigwigs wanted to sign him in the summer transfer window before he decided to stay with Athletic Club. However, Barcelona and other clubs are his prospective suitors for next year.
Will Barcelona finally sign Williams?
Barcelona mulled over signing Nico Williams in the summer transfer window before the move failed to see the light of day. The continued interest is understandable, considering the Blaugrana will look to sign a wide attacker next year if they part ways with Ferran Torres.
So, Williams has emerged as a viable target for Barcelona. However, the Catalan giants will adopt the “once bitten, twice shy” policy while pursuing the 22-year-old UEFA Euro 2024 winner. They will only launch the offensive to land the Athletic Club winger if he expresses his readiness to leave the Basque outfit and join them.
Williams has been keen on joining Barcelona for a long time, but he decided to commit his short-term future to Athletic Club earlier this year. It will be interesting to see if he changes his mind and leaves the Basque giants next year.
