Chelsea are leading the race for Viktor Gyokeres, as the Swedish striker is reportedly ready to leave Sporting CP ahead of January.
According to Fichajes, Chelsea are emerging as a frontrunner for Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the January window. The striker may leave Sporting CP, and the Blues will undoubtedly face competition for the Swedish striker, who has a staggering €100 million release clause in his contract.
Viktor Gyokeres has scored more than half his goal tally from last season, as he already has 23 goals to his name this term. The Swedish striker has not seen a drop off in form, and that has cemented the interest of several top clubs ahead of the January window.
Earlier, Gyokeres indicated he was content with life at Sporting, although Ruben Amorim’s departure has changed the equation for the striker. His contract has a €100 million release clause, which was always going to make it harder for interested clubs to sign him, although ahead of the January window, there’s hope that he could be made available.
Sporting CP have no reason to demand anything less than that, but it’s a matter of using the opportunity to make a profit on their investment, which has lasted for a season and a half. Gyokeres is keen to explore the Premier League and might be open to leaving Sporting as soon as January.
Manchester United are interested precisely because of Amorim’s presence, while Arsenal have long admired the striker. Others are in the mix, including clubs from Spain, as the 23-goal in-demand attacker will have many options should he leave Sporting.
Chelsea front runners for Gyokeres?
Chelsea are considered front runners for Gyokeres because they are willing to invest in the striker. Nicolas Jackson’s presence is not considered enough, and despite the striker’s good form this season, Enzo Maresca wants another player who could compete with him and take the team to a new level.
As of now, Chelsea could see themselves as strong favourites for the top four and probably even considered an outsider in the title race. To achieve either of those objectives, they could see the need to invest in a player like Gyokeres to take their team to the next level. The entire transaction will depend on how much Sporting is willing to reduce his asking price, as paying €100 million might seem a bit far-fetched.
