Arsenal and Chelsea have received a major boost in their pursuit of Sporting CP attacking sensation Viktor Gyokeres.
Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres for a while now. According to a report from TBR, both Premier League giants have received a significant boost in their pursuit of the Swedish striker as it is increasingly likely that he will return to England in the near future.
Gyokeres was a part of the Brighton first-team back in the day but he didn’t get a chance to impress under Graham Potter. They ended up selling him to Converty City where he made a name for himself before joining Sporting CP in the summer of 2023.
The move to Portugal has done wonders for the 26-year-old striker. He bagged 43 goals and 15 assists in his debut campaign and has backed it up with another stellar start to the 2024/25 season. The Swedish striker has been on the wishlist of Arsenal and Chelsea for some time now.
The scouts of both teams would have watched him score a hattrick and help Sporting take down Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The hat trick saw him go up to 23 goals in his 17 outings in the new season.
Gyokeres is ready to return to England
While his contract at the Portuguese club runs until the summer of 2028 and the Swedish international is in no hurry to pick his next club, there is a high possibility of him returning to England. The initial plan was to make a name for himself at Sporting and then have a stint in the Serie A before heading to the Premier League.
But, the increasing interest has altered his plans and he seems set to take the English top flight by storm where Arsenal and Chelsea have been waiting to add him to their ranks. Mikel Arteta seeks a world-class goal scorer who can help him battle the best clubs in the world and Gyokeres is surely one of the hottest forwards in the world at this point in time.
The Blues were keen on signing a new number nine in the summer. Things didn’t go according to plan but their intention is still the same despite the impressive performances of their current forwards. While Gyokeres has a massive £83 million release clause, Sporting could let him leave for a fee close to £70 million next summer.
